My Instagram husband and I hardly ever celebrate or plan anything for Valentine’s Day, so it was on a whim when we detoured to Sham Shui Po’s Be Tabula Rasa Studio on the 14th of February. The little dried flower workshop-cum-café is a hidden oasis in the busy streets, and if it hadn’t gained fame on social media, no one would stumble across it with its location in one of the upstairs room of a sketchy, crumbling building. I loved it, and I guarantee you’ll love it too.
Be Tabula Rasa Studio is a relief from noisy Sham Shui Po. The quiet environment houses three fat cats that regard you only if you have food, as well as the cutest hedgehog taking an afternoon nap. Serving up a small selection of snacks and drinks, the homey café was crowded when I went, and I’m guessing it will be until the hype on social media dies down. If you really want flawless photos without heads in the background, wait a while before you visit.
When it comes to the interior of Be Tabula Rasa Studio, think white walls, vintage furniture and lots of dried flowers. If you’re seeking the fragrant smell of fresh flowers, then you’ve come to the wrong place – the dried bouquets here are made of odourless paper only. There are random pieces of decor splashed around the single room ranging from giant log chunks to shelves made of tree branches. My favourite part about Be Tabula Rasa Studio is that there is a wooden bookshelf where visitors can pick their own leisurely reads at will. It’s a great resting stop to chill at for an afternoon.
If you like animals or just floral-filled backdrops, then Be Tabula Rasa Studio is perfect for you. Bring along a few girly friends and your afternoon is sorted. Shopping for electronics on Apliu Street nearby is a great experience to have in Hong Kong, too, if you’re up for it. Just note that the noisy streets won’t have an atmosphere that is nearly as serene as Be Tabula Rasa Studio!
