Jason and I never really celebrate nor plan anything for Valentine’s Day. After a quick lunch at a nearby café, we decided on a whim to detour to Sham Shui Po’s Be Tabula Rasa Studio, a little dried-flower workshop cum café. It’s a hidden oasis in the busy streets, and if it hadn’t gained fame on social media, no one would stumble across it with its location in one of the upstairs room of a sketchy, crumbling building. I loved it, and I guarantee you’ll love it too.
Be Tabula Rasa Studio is a chill flowery environment with three fat cats roaming around at their own free will and the cutest sleeping hedgehog. The homey place serves snacks which you don’t even have to pay for (but of course everyone just makes a little donation) but Jason and I just decided to have a drink there. It was crowded and I’m guessing it will be until the hype about the place dies down, so if you really want flawless photos, wait a while!
When it comes to the interior of Be Tabula Rasa Studio, think white walls, vintage furniture and lots of dried flowers. If you’re seeking the fragrant smell of fresh flowers, then you’ve come to the wrong place – the dried bouquets here are made of odourless paper only. There are random pieces of decor splashed around the single room ranging from giant log chunks to shelves made of tree branches. My favourite part about Be Tabula Rasa Studio is that there is a wooden bookshelf where visitors can pick their own leisurely reads at will. A chill environment for sure!
During our brief time there, Jason and I couldn’t stop stroking the three fat cats. The attention of every visitor was fixated on them because they were just so bold, coming up to us and occupying empty tables without a care in the world. They were nothing on the hedgehog, though, which despite not scampering around, was adorable on its own little world snoring in its enclosure.
If you like animals or greenery, then Be Tabula Rasa Studio is perfect for you. Around the Sham Shui Po area after a day shopping for electronics on Apliu Street? Then make sure you drop in at this café. You won’t regret it.
