If you have to dress formally for work, you’ll probably find yourself with a closet dedicated to your 9-to-6, and no space for casual wear. Firstly, I would like to apologise. It must suck having to wear the same ol’ business skirt to work every day. It’s no wonder you’re uninspired for fashion. So here’s an idea: instead of dreading the skirt, why not spice it up and make dressing up fun?
The answer to making your workwear exciting lies in the crew sock. That’s right. When paired with the knee length business skirt, the matching black socks somehow create a more youthful outfit that should just be formal enough for your workplace. It’s a simple but effective way to add a little cheer to your monotonous office dress code.

Depending on the season, you’ll either have a short-sleeved or a long-sleeved blouse to pair with the business skirt. If your dress code edges more on the casual side of business casual, feel free to ditch the button-up for a laid back Long-Sleeved Top (link here). It doesn’t need to be expensive too. The top I’m wearing is thrifted from Hong Kong’s Argyle Centre, but looks perfectly presentable in an office setting all the same.
Next comes the Business Skirt (link here), a.k.a. your daily uniform. The typical business skirt is high waist, knee length and black in colour. You know the one I’m talking about. If you don’t have one right now, you’ll need one sooner or later. And when you do, there’s really no need to get a pricey brand as the piece is so generic. Mine is simply from a local boutique called Shopaholic852.
To complement the professional look of the business skirt, a pair of Uniqlo Ribbed Socks (link here) gets the job done. Remember to go for a pair in black! The simple addition gives a sense of classic charm to the otherwise boring outfit, and has the added bonus of keeping your legs warm, too.
Remember the post I wrote about the Gucci loafers that is all the rage these days? I’m still wearing my Gucci loafer dupes, and you should be too. If you still don’t have a pair, what planet are you living on? Go get the Dorothy Perkins Black Lola Snaffle Loafers (link here) quick, although it might just be sold out by now…
Fashion is a funny thing. I had no idea how to wear the business skirt casually at first. In fact, this outfit did not come together until I pulled on a pair of crew socks, and then, it was like magic. So if you’re stuck in that dreaded 9-to-6 formal workwear, don’t fret. There are always ways to spice up that one pesky piece!
