Six years is a pretty big deal for a relationship when you’re in your 20’s. After five years of not taking anniversaries seriously, my boyfriend – and Instagram husband – and I decided to splurge this year. We’d wanted to try upscale French cuisine for the longest time, and honestly, what better place for that than Michelin two-star restaurant Caprice?
Located at the Four Seasons Hong Kong in the heart of Central, Caprice is led by recently appointed Chef de Cuisine, Guillaume Galliot. Welding impeccable food and service, right down to taking extra care to note dietary restrictions, it’s easy to see why Caprice is Hong Kong’s prime example of French fine dining. It’s very much worth the splurge for a special occasion.

The interior space of Caprice is bound to astound even those who, like me, only have eyes for modern architecture. Stunning high ceilings, adorned with Chinese-inspired crystal chandeliers, give way to floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Victoria Harbour and the Kowloon peninsula. From luxuriously rich furniture to cutlery made in France, every intricate detail adds to the dining experience. It’s the epitome of elegance.
Caprice’s Menu du Weekend rotates on a monthly basis, featuring a choice of three to five courses of innovative French cuisine. In between each course, complimentary palate warmers, warm bread and sweet delights are offered. The food quashed all my beliefs about small and stingy portions that fine dining restaurants tend to serve – I found myself wholly satisfied at the end of the meal.
Between four main course choices of meats and fish, I decided on the John Dory fish. It arrived like a piece of art, drizzled with caper and mushroom bouillon and beautifully accompanied by a delicious fennel pureé. The smudges of black garlic brought out the sweet taste of the fish meat, impelling me to devour every morsel of the plate. I was unable to stop until my Coffee and Cacao Crumble dessert was licked clean. Needless to say, very glam… not.
If you’re a total newbie to French fine dining, let Caprice be your gateway to a world of wonders. The restaurant offers reasonably priced daily set lunches guaranteed to stun you with the flavours. For an even more daring splurge, go for dinner, order from the à la carte selections and sit back to the impressed look on your date’s face. Because if that isn’t worth it, then what is?
