If you find yourself starved of outfit ideas, why not take a trip down memory lane and flip through your old family albums? Your parents’ outfits may not be the first thing you think of when you’re looking for #fashioninspo, but sometimes, a little ridiculousness is all it takes. Now’s time to find the father in you and embrace the Dad outfit.
Over the past few years, fashion trends have been jumping around different time periods. Truth be told, I myself am not sure where we’re at now. The 60s, 70s, or 80s? With everything going on all at once, it’s safe to say that today, even the Dad outfit can serve as inspiration.

The first Dad outfit component to parrot is the infamous tucked in shirt. That’s probably the most prevalent trend your parents rocked if you were a 90’s kid. Go all out and tuck in that whole collared shirt, or leave half of it hanging loose, like me. The reddish-brown Long-Sleeved Top (link here) I’m wearing is from a streetside boutique store in Seoul and originally inspired this blog post. It’s the perfect candidate for a Dad outfit with the awkward neckline and boxy fit.

Next in line for the Dad outfit are the stonewashed jeans. Baggy, but not rapper-baggy, these jeans are basically shapeless and will show the world that you have given up. Imitate the look with some light-washed boyfriend jeans, ideally with a small number of rips, and you’re good to go. The pair I’m wearing are the Basic Slim Jeans (link here) from Zara Kids, but since most people don’t wear kids clothing, I’ve linked a similar pair in a reasonable size instead.
And of course, no Dad outfit is complete without the quintessential Dad trainers. Remember those ugly New Balances that everyone wore once upon a time? Well, they’re back. Unfortunately, I haven’t had a chance to get myself a pair yet, but they’re ugly anyway. Instead, take my advice and pull on a pair of Nike Air Force 1‘s (link here). They’re still classic and you’ll look much better.
I mean, I typed this post up with a lot of snide, but fact is, the Dad outfit is actually great inspiration. I didn’t think my Dad’s awful choice of clothing would motivate me to dress beyond my comfort zone, but hey, it did and it works. How about you?
