The denim skirt. Mini, maxi, low waist, high waist. There are so many variations of this piece of clothing, each slipping in and out of trend with time. But one thing’s for sure – the denim skirt has, no doubt, always been around. It’s the essential item every girl should have in their wardrobe. It’s the reliable best friend that’ll never let you down.
Back when I was in high school in the noughties – yes, I am that old, sigh – mini skirts were all the rage. I had a huge collection of them, but the one I pulled out from the pile every time was always the denim skirt. With the trend throwing back to the nineties’ in the present day, the high waist denim skirt is showing up everywhere in every form. That’s why no matter whether it’s the split front, the distressed or the A-line you’re after, you’ll need a good, reliable denim skirt to tide you over when you feel uninspired.

To start off, you’re going to need a minimal top to highlight the star of the outfit, the denim skirt. Choosing a t-shirt or tank top in a single colour is the way to go. You can make it a little wacky with unconventional details like the longer sleeves of the white t-shirt from ALAND I’m wearing. The key here is to keep both the shape and shade of your top simple so that it doesn’t distract from the denim skirt.
Next up on the list is, of course, the reliable denim skirt. Go with a high waist variety and tuck in your top just like I do with my high waist denim skirt from H&M Kids. Yes, they are from the kids’ section… it’s the only denim skirt I can find that fits, so sue me. If you’re wearing white on your upper body, then go ahead and pick any shade of light to dark blue denim. Otherwise, make sure to colour coordinate and choose your denim skirt wisely.
Regular readers of my blog should get the general drift when it comes to shoes for my outfits. I don’t think I’ve published one post that doesn’t feature a pair of trainers. If you’ve followed my minimalist top and denim skirt combo closely up to this point, then follow through with the no-frills theme and go with a classic pair of sneaks. I’ve chosen to pull on my trusty black and white Adidas Superstars.
I have quite a few small backpacks, including a dome-shaped one from New Look, but I’m surprised I haven’t yet featured my all-time favourite bag from vintage store Bunkaya Zakkaten. Not only did I swipe it at a great deal, but it’s also unique. Swing on a black faux-leather backpack – or a real one if you can afford it – and your look is complete. The details and texture of the bag will round off the minimalist denim skirt look.
I don’t think you need more convincing that every girl needs a denim skirt, right? Timeless and versatile, it’s the ultimate casual piece that can be worn for both day and night time looks. There are several variations of the high waist denim skirt trending right now, so take my advice: get one of every style, or one of every colour. You can thank me later.
