My addiction to overalls began when I graduated from high school. Over the years, I accumulated more and more pieces. I bought my first overall dress from a street stall in Thailand, and after wearing it once, promptly forgot about it. It wasn’t until the other day when I went through a huge wardrobe purge did I rediscover the overall dress I bargained so hard for two years ago.
Classic, long-panted overalls? Nah. Overall shorts? Nah. C’mon now, do you want to bother with the annoying process of almost stripping naked when you go to the porta potty? Summer calls for the overall dress. Not only does it add a feminine touch to the traditionally masculine piece, but it also adds a heck lot of convenience, too.

The overall dress can be a candidate year round if you pair it with the appropriate top. For an outfit in the summer, though, put on a thin t-shirt. Your instincts may tell you to choose a neutral colour like white, but there are so many white and denim combos out there already. Why not go with grey instead? Still subtle, but not as common. My Grey T-Shirt (link here) was thrifted at Hong Kong’s infamous bargain mall, Argyle Centre, for next to nothing, and has lasted me longer than five years. A real life miracle!
Next comes the star of the show, the Overall Dress (link here). It’s definitely back on trend now in 2017, so thank your lucky stars as you’ll have many places to look for your perfect piece. If I remember correctly, I found mine at Platinum Mall in Bangkok. And because I’m very tight fisted when it comes to spending money, I got it at a steal after a round of bargaining, once again. You don’t need to go through that, though. Many budget-friendly shops offer variations of the overall dress. Try H&M, Forever 21 or Topshop.
And of course, tell me, how could I not finish the look off with my Nike Air Force 1‘s (link here)? They’re trendy, comfortable and they complement my minimalist outfit. Pairing trainers with the overall dress gives off a casual vibe, so unless you want to look mismatched with ten-inch high stilettos on, I’d suggest looking for a pair of your own grubby kicks.
I hadn’t thought of the Canvas Bag (link here) from Green Cotton the first time I put on the overall dress two years ago, but this time around, I discovered that it really completes the outfit. Many bloggers tend to wear the overall dress with a crossbody bag – which is fine, but why stick to the rule when your outfit is already so minimalist? Go against the tide and get your own cloth bag. It weighs basically nothing and fits everything a girl would need too!
I hope the overall dress trend is here to stay, because in McDonald’s words, I’m lovin’ it. Compared to the overall shorts or the jumpsuit, I mean, because it enables me to use the toilet conveniently. How about you? Are you going to bring the overall dress back, too, or do you hate it with a passion? Let me know in the comments!
