If there’s one place for ice cream, it’s Thailand. The country’s ever-summer weather makes the sweet treat perfect anytime and anywhere. This holds true even in the cooler northern region of Chiang Mai. There are countless choices around the city: Swensen’s, Dairy Queen and Haagen-Dazs are just a few. But c’mon now. Why settle for an overrated global restaurant when you can have homemade artisan ice creams at Piccadilly Chiang Mai? Exactly my point.
But there’s more than artisan ice creams to make Piccadilly Chiang Mai stand out amongst the rest. Yep, you got it. It’s the architecture of the little dessert shop. It may be small in size but its spunky design certainly makes up for it, carefully mirroring the tastes of Instagrammers and influencers. What does this mean? Well, think pink.
Though tiny, only occupying a narrow corner of Soi 7 on the popular Nimmanhaemin Road, Piccadilly Chiang Mai immediately stands out thanks to its pink exterior. Peek in, and you’ll see a large, pebble-covered outdoor area and a modest indoor space, where the sweets are made, behind. The design is every millennial’s dream in real life. Flamingoes, cacti and Aesop squirt bottles are amongst the few props scattered around the outdoor area, while the actual shop itself is decked out with neon lights and marble counters. It’s like the architect scrolled through Instagram and produced a replica of the most famous #hashtags in one place.
Picadilly Chiang Mai is known for its photogenic ice creams, which can be customised from more than a dozen homemade flavours with more than a dozen topping varieties. Most visitors go for a waffle cone, but feel free to have your DIY masterpiece in a cup as well. Alternatively, pick a pastel milkshake or even some of the wide array of confectioneries such as cakes and cookies. Your sweet tooth will be sweetly satisfied.
Cheap and convenient, Piccadilly Chiang Mai is a great pick for an afternoon treat or for post-dinner dessert. The taste of the ice cream is nothing too spectacular, but the extra calories are worth it for the Instagram shot. So, what do you say? Bring your girlfriends along, because it’s going to be a full-on photoshoot. 😉
