There are two kinds of people out there: the kind that embraces the airy freedom that culottes bring, and the kind that rejects the clown-like appearance of these wide legged pants. It’s safe to say that culottes are a hit-or-miss. Pinstripe culottes? Even more so… which is exactly why I love them. If you’re worried you’ll resemble a clown after putting on your own culottes, then look no further. In this blog post, I’ll let you know how you can style pinstripe culottes without ending up the laughing stock of a party.
I may not be the world’s top expert when it comes to culottes, but I do own several pieces of these pants and have always received compliments for the way I’ve styled them. Out of my collection, the pinstripe culottes are definitely the most difficult to work with. The key to these pants is to balance out the boldness of the black and white stripes by keeping the rest of the outfit quiet.

Start the outfit with a blank canvas to highlight the statement pinstripe culottes. Since the culottes are high waist, it makes sense to wear a cropped t-shirt to accompany them. My Forever 21 Girls White T-Shirt (link here) isn’t designed to fit like a cropped top, but because it’s made for children and therefore a smaller size, it only reaches down to just below my belly button. The cropped shirt has the added bonus of elongating your legs, too, when paired with the vertical stripes of the pinstripe culottes. 😉
As the statement piece, the Pinstripe Culottes (link here) jump out immediately against the white t-shirt, so if flashy colours aren’t in the realm of your comfort zone, go for a black and white pattern. My own pinstripe culottes were purchased in ALAND and have bold, thick stripes. If eye-catching stripes are too loud for you, choose pinstripe culottes with thinner detailing. Thinner stripes are much easier to work with in an otherwise quiet outfit.
Before heading out the door, slip on a pair of white shoes to match the white t-shirt. For a glam look, grab a pair of heels, but if you’re like me and just heading out for a casual lunch, then trainers are for you. I’m wearing my chunky Nike Air Force 1‘s (link here) that complements the pinstripe culottes well. Choose what style you may for your footwear, but make sure it’s in white for consistency.
I’ve been all about the canvas bag lately, but for a quick lunch date, a small bag suffices. My H&M Black Small Shoulder Bag (link here) came at a budget-friendly price and fits all my essentials just fine. As long as I have my wallet, my phone and my camera, I’m good to go! The small bag balances out the outfit’s proportions as well, so the pinstripe culottes and the chunky trainers don’t look too large overall. Plus, you can’t deny that it’s more convenient to take out than a small backpack!
When it comes to pinstripe culottes, especially those with bolder and thicker stripes, it is possible to not look like you’re wearing the puffy striped pants of a clown’s. It all goes down to how you style it and what other pieces you wear the statement pants with. Let me know in the comments whether or not you like culottes too, and if you do, how you normally style them!
