I am not a sporty person. I don’t exercise at all. In fact, I am a sloth. But there’s no doubt that the in last few years, athleisure fashion has been in – and what d’ya say, I happen to love it. I know I ain’t foolin’ no one when I pull on a pair of yoga pants, but I still like to think I can somehow carry the trend. So, how exactly do I successfully (in my own opinion lol) pull the sporty look off? What are my deepest, darkest secrets to looking sporty?
Well, you’re in luck. Today, in exchange for nothing, I reveal all.
I ran regularly three years ago but the habit eventually faded out. In November, I tried to pick it back up and came really close to a breakthrough when I trained up for a 3k race that I ran in December. But guess what? After the race, I just stopped running completely. The end.
Maybe I’m not a runner, or maybe I’m just not cut out for moving. Either way, you gotta fake it ’till you make it when it comes to fashion. So without further ado, here are my secrets to looking sporty.
1. Throw on an oversized hoodie
While I suggest a jumper in my winter fashion formula, you’ll need a hoodie instead to achieve the sporty look. I highly recommend an oversized one too because if you’re not actually athletic, you’re either skinny-fat like me or you have a few rolls on your stomach (and there’s nothing wrong with that) that you want to hide.
An oversized hoodie solves every problem. A thin one works in summer and a thick one works in winter.
Me, I am not quite ready to part with rose quartz, 2016’s Pantone Colour of the Year, just yet. Hence the similar pink shade I chose for my hoodie from H&M. It’s perfect for covering up my unathletic build.
2. Throw on some sporty leggings
The second of my secrets to looking sporty is to pull on a pair of leggings – but make sure those leggings are patterned! Real running leggings or yoga pants are designed to shape up your butt. 😉 You can find a huge selection at high-end athleisure stores like Lululemon, but if that’s a little out of your budget as it is with me, go for everyday brands like Forever 21 or Cotton On.
Can you believe the grey leggings I’m wearing are from H&M? They scream “sporty”! Granted, they were on the expensive side for the brand, but not over HKD$200, which is still a steal in my opinion. They also make my legs look super skinny and I know most people would appreciate the slimming design.
3. Throw on a pair of trainers
We can’t forget the trainers to round off the last of my secrets to looking sporty. In essence, any pair will do, but I wouldn’t suggest going with a model specifically tailored for fashion. For example, if I really wanted to fool someone into thinking that I’m actually fit, I wouldn’t wear my Nike Air Force 1’s just for the reason that I can’t actually exercise in them.
In my outfit, I’m wearing my new pink Adidas Superstars. You will not believe the heights I climbed just to find them in my size! I searched through every store in Hong Kong before I found these babies from a shoe retailer. I nearly cried of happiness.
Yep, it’s that simple, my fashion secrets to looking sporty. I suppose my outfit recipe is common sense, but there are people who don’t have common sense, trust me.
