Google “best massage in Chiang Mai”, and you’ll find an endless list of recommendations. Massages are popular all over Thailand, and Chiang Mai certainly doesn’t lose out. But with so many choices in the city, which one really is the best? Well, forget the large parlours, and don’t be fooled by the places that have a handy English website. The answer you’re searching for is the U Chiang Mai Spa.
The best thing about the U Chiang Mai Spa is that it’s a hotel spa, meaning that you get to have your massage in the swanky setting of U Chiang Mai. As one of the most prestigious hotels in the city, it’s an experience you don’t want to miss.
Strolling through the streets of Old Town in Chiang Mai, you might stumble across U Chiang Mai. If you’re a design fiend, the beautiful minimalist and white architecture will draw you right in, like it did with me. The hotel may look simple from the outside, but walk in, and it’s an entirely different story. Outdoor patios right outside every hotel room, just one step away from the crystal waters of the swimming pool in the centre of the lot, with deck chairs scattered all around for sunbathing. If only a night’s stay was cheaper!
The setting of U Chiang Mai is down to pat, but does the massage measure up? Well, your resident blogger, a.k.a. me, decided to splurge and be your guinea pig. Instead of the traditional spa options, though, I chose the 60-minute Lanna Body Scrub. The hotel was doing a promotion at the time as well, so the price for it was down from 2500THB to 900THB – a steal for sure amongst other luxury spa options in the city.
Both the waiting room and the private massage rooms have designs reminiscent of the architecture in Harry Potter. Dark and comfortable, the spaces set a perfect spa environment with velvet couches and bending bookshelves lined with classy coffee table magazines. Although the hotel staff brings you to the spa area, the U Chiang Mai Spa employs specialists for the massage itself. My masseuse was a frank woman in her 60s whose unabashed attitude to my body scrub melted my nervousness away. That’s really saying something because I had to strip down to my toes in front of a complete stranger, and I didn’t feel embarrassed at all!
In the past, I’ve had masseuses who did not use enough strength, probably because they’re afraid of hurting my fragile build. The U Chiang Mai Spa masseuse knew exactly how much strength I needed during the massage and delivered a flawless experience. One hundred percent would recommend!
If you’re looking for a spa session or a massage like no other, then don’t hesitate to check out the U Chiang Mai Spa. It may be a little unconventional compared to famed massage parlours in Chiang Mai, but it’s no doubt the hidden gem you’re after.
